Hollywood's Favorite Black Movie

Obsessed. The Perfect Guy. When The Bough Breaks. The Intruder. No Good Deed. ‘Til Death Do Us Part. Motives. Only for One Night. Fatal Attraction.

It’s that time of the year where Hollywood gives us their (emphasis on their) favorite movie. A psychological thriller where someone in a marriage either decides to cheat or heavily leads someone on which leads them to be a psycho. Every movie has their own subtle difference. Jaz Sinclair in When the Bough Breaks was just crazy for the sake of being crazy. Idris Elba just felt the need to target the wrong people because his woman was cheating in No Good Deed. Angelique Pereira felt the need to seduce, drug, and rape her own sister’s husband and then attempt to kill herself when he didn’t want to love her back.

Every year they give us this movie with a different name and a couple of different actors/actresses and every time we ask why? Because they know we’re going to go buy our movie ticket or we’re going to sit on the couch and log on to Netflix to watch. We’re going to fuss, complain, and then realize that as Black people, we have the responsibility of supporting Black actors.

But the other side to the common complaints are “Why don’t they give us other movies?”, “We want some creativity. We want something different.”, or “We need a new storyline.” And the problem I see with that is, Black people love to say that these movies aren’t out there. But they are and people love to reduce them to “low budget films.” Reducing these films to just “low budget films” is reducing the validation of independent films and independent filmmakers. It invalidates the struggle it is to put together a budget, write a script, find actors, and actually make a film without a big company backing you.

The Black love story, the Black horror stories, the Black crime stories, the Black comedies are all out there and they aren’t hard to find. Well Maddy, Miss Know-It-All, where do I find them? Thanks for asking. My #1 Black Cinema movies spot is Tubitv.com ! No subscriptions needed. You can create a log-in to save your movies or you can just watch it. They have a website, and apps on iPhone, Android, Roku, and Amazon Fire. From there, all you have to do is find the Black Cinema section which has over 200+ Black films from Black filmmakers with Black actors.

The moral of this story is SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS! Because we’re making the movies that you’ve been waiting to see.

Love and Light,

Maddy
