Do You Play The Game?

Hey! Hey! Happy Throwback Thursday. It’s the day of the week when we take it back to the 99 and the 00s. Today, we talk about one of my favorite early 00s films *drop roll* it’s Two Can Play That Game! A 2001 film with an ELITE cast with basically a storyline about adults who ain’t got no sense. Okay but seriously if you’ve never seen TCPTG, it’s a romantic comedy that follows a woman named Shante Smith, played by Vivica A. Fox, who gives out relationship advice to her best friends and us. It’s like a youtube tutorial but a film, truly ahead of its time.

So first things first per usual, let’s get into this cast! Y’all ready for these names because it’s a long list. First we have Shante Smith who is played by Vivica A. Fox and Keith Fenton who is played by Morris Chestnut (amen!). Also on the cast, Anthony Anderson, Gabrielle Union, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Tamala Jones, Mo’Nique, Bobby Brown, and Dondré T. Whitfield. I mean like come on, in the early 00s this was a cast, am I right? Of course I am, don’t worry about agreeing. As I stated before this is a romantic comedy so here were the mash-ups. Wendy had Bobby and Bobby was the “fixer upper” man. You know the one where you see all the “potential” and then once he gets that “potential”, he starts acting a fool! Y’all know what I mean. Next we got Tamala and Dondré, now Dondré was the cheating man, I literally don’t have anything else to add to that. Now there was Mo’Nique and her man Tyrone. Tyrone was played by Ian ‘Blaze’ Kelly, who has some more acting credits including his role as D-Bone on Southland. Now Tyrone was the no-job having, always borrowing money, eating you out of house and home lazy man. Lastly, we had Vivica and Morris, and Morris was the good man; had the job, the chocolate, respected her, I mean like he was the one.

Now throughout the movie Shante gives her girls advice on how to deal with their man but she finds herself in a little bind when she tries them with her man. But the difference between Keith and them other men is Keith was actually worth something. Now Keith was dumb cause why you at the club with your co-worker and you supposed to be “working late”. If they was “hungry”, well he should’ve took the hoe to Burger King (do you know what 2000 film that’s from? You should). Anyways, Shante blew this out of proportion, like most women do, and put him through all these tests when he was really just taking a co-worker to get some food after work. She started playing games, he played the games back and they went through a whole bunch of nothing for no reason.

My absolutely favorite part about this movie is the dynamic of Shante and her friends. You got the friend that’s always giving advice, the one that might need a shoulder, the rowdy one, and the mixture. If anyone cares, I’m the rowdy one. But anyways, the film showed how even though we might always lean on our girls , there are also times where we don’t even let them see us sweat and those are the times when we need them the most. It’s one of those beautiful displays of black women relationships which was a classic movie trend up until 2010. And it has cute bloopers at the end before the credits. Two Can Play That Game can be watched now on Tubi.com!

Love and Light,

Maddy
